Nieuws: Ian Buruma nieuwe hoofdredacteur van The New York Review of Books
Ian Buruma is de nieuwe hoofdredacteur van The New York Review of Books. Buruma volgt de onlangs overleden Robert B. Silvers op. Sinoloog en essayist Buruma schrijft sinds de jaren tachtig voor The New York Review of Books.
Buruma die ook schreef voor The New Yorker, The New York Times en The Guardian is momenteel hoogleraar Democracy, Human Rights, and Journalism aan Bard College. In 2008 kreeg hij de Erasmusprijs.
Uitgever Rea Hederman over Buruma als hoofdredacteur:
I’ve known Ian since 1985 and know that his long association with the Review will ensure that the values and editorial direction of the Review will be upheld, […] Ian’s long relationship with both founding editors will preserve the editorial quality and independence for which the Review has been known since its first issue in 1963.

Misschien wel aardig om nog te melden dat Ian Buruma uit Nederland komt, en behalve voor The New Yorker, The New York Times en The Guardian ook jaren lang voor NRC Handelsblad schreef. Aanvankelijk studeerde hij filmkunde in Japan en stuurde hij ons geregeld mooie stukken voor het Cultureel Supplement, tot hij besloot voortaan alleen nog maar in het Engels te schrijven en de relaties wat minder hecht werden.
